DEFCON, the 9000+ attendee hacker conference in Vegas has become a sort of hydra conference. It has become more like a global fair than what most people think of conferences; even the badge is highly unique. I say this because there are so many things to do at DEFCON, other than going to talks, that [...]

I’m awfully excited to note (belatedly) that Banshee, the free and open source music player for Linux, turned 1.0 a couple weeks ago. When I first surveyed all the music players available for the girlfriend’s Linux laptop, Banshee looked the most promising, but it was still in a fairly unstable beta. Now that it’s finished, [...]

At JavaOne in May, 2006, Sun Microsystems announced they were going to release Java as free software under the terms of the GPL. The size of the task (6.5 million lines of code) was only eclipsed by the size of the opportunity for Java as a free and open technology.
At JavaOne in May 2007, Sun [...]

It’s easy to make the mistake. The idea that the fact these things are free of cost isn’t the major motivator is something that is over most peoples heads.
Take movie piracy for example. The fact that it enabled you to get movies without paying is only a tiny fraction of the allure. It’s the only [...]

If you type about:config in your address bar, Firefox opens the master directory of user-defined preferences and built-in settings. The ultimate arena for performance tampering, the about:config settings are the foundation for programming Firefox extensions.

An Information Week article published last week appears to position Microsoft as trying to do something right when it comes to open source. And it positions the open source community as being not quite ready to make nice after past insults, threats, and abuse.
Speaking for myself, I am always ready to see what somebody has [...]

Do you need to change your web host or switch your database server? This is probably the only time when you really think of backing up your MySQL data. If you’ve got a website with a database or your custom database running for your applications, it is imperative that you make regular backups of the [...]

We’re kinda late on reporting this but, this for those of us who are artistically challenged need all the help we can get when it comes to design software. A vector tracing tool called Vector Magic (the result of Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Laboratory research project by James Diebel and Jacob Norda) was a valuable [...]

Even Opera gets pwnt. IE 8 and Safari couldn’t be completed because they crashed during testing. The drop in memory usage at the end is when they close all but one tab - IE7 never releases memory.

Today is a great day for all the people waiting for the first bits and pieces of Amarok 2 on Windows. Amarok developer shakes worked hard to get it ready for you. Enjoy! Please be aware that it is only a tech preview with a lot of known problems. From the amarok.kde.org posting:
